Discover the Eastern Dales

Nidderdale, Lower Wensleydale, Uredale and the Harrogate District

West Tanfield by David Tarn

Whatever your interests, the Eastern Dales has something to make your holiday truly special! There are attractive market towns and villages, a historic city, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden, a World Heritage Site, a theme park and plenty of things to see and do.

A wide variety of mouth-watering foods are made in the area and can be bought locally, including cheeses, beer, wine and chocolates. There is also locally reared lamb, beef, game and fish to tempt you - so why not tantalise your taste buds during your holiday or on the journey home!

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, there’s everything from mountain biking and sailing or canoeing, to pony trekking and trout fishing in Nidderdale AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), which is a land of contrasts from wind swept heather clad moorland to quaint villages and gentle green meadows. Whether your interests are activity based, bird watching or wildflowers, Nidderdale offers that little bit extra!

An ideal way to explore the area is via the Nidderdale Way, a 53 mile circular walk that takes in some of its most striking features. A favourite base for exploration is Pateley Bridge - a charming Britain In Bloom winning town.

In Lower Wensleydale the countryside becomes more pastoral with gently rolling fields, woodland and picturesque villages. The areas within and surrounding the market towns of Bedale and Masham are home to a wide variety of food and drink producers offering mouth-watering Yorkshire Dales specialities for you to sample and enjoy! There are high quality arts and crafts people so why not watch them at work or explore the numerous workshops and galleries for that special holiday gift.

If cultural heritage is what you are looking for, visit Uredale and the Harrogate District. The Yorkshire Dales has two historic centres - the cathedral city of Ripon with its quaint medieval streets and quirky heritage attractions, and the bustling floral spa town of Harrogate with its selective shops and galleries. Why not visit RHS Garden Harlow Carr, one of Yorkshire's most relaxing and surprising gardens. Perfect for relaxation or practical ideas.

The surrounding Yorkshire Dales countryside features some magnificent heritage too, including including Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water GardenNewby Hall and Ripley Castle to name but a few.  Today's visitors can therefore experience the historic and the modern, along with delicious tearooms, pubs and restaurants and a fascinating array of shops!

Events are held throughout the year, so whatever your interests and whatever the season, the Eastern Dales has something to make your holiday special.
