Eastern Dales - Masham

Masham by Peter Horton

Set in the stunning Lower Wensleydale countryside, Masham is famous for its Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally and annual Sheep Fair in September where up to 80,000 sheep can be sold at any one time!

It boasts not one but two famous breweries! - Black Sheep and Theakston.

Masham’s market charter was granted in 1250 and the town subsequently thrived due to the easy access of the flocks from nearby Fountains and Jervaulx Abbeys. It still hosts a market every Wednesday and Saturday, and there are plenty of welcoming pubs and delightful tearooms.

Artists such as Turner visited Masham and it was reportedly one of Lewis Carroll’s favourite spots. Today arts and crafts people still abound so you will find plenty of galleries to while away the time and perhaps find that special gift!

For heritage enthusiasts, there is a beautiful church, fine architecture and some lovely old Georgian buildings.

The park is ideal for children and there are tennis courts nearby. There is a golf course, horse riding and plenty of walks from riverside strolls to moorland hikes, as well as an extensive events calendar.
