Western Dales - Sedbergh

Sedbergh

Nestling in the foothills of the magnificent Howgill Fells in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Sedbergh is full of character with cobbled yards and fascinating historic houses, many of which bear the hallmarks of the old knitting and woollen trades.

The town has several quality galleries, craft workshops, an art and heritage centre, and a fine Norman church dating from around 1130. Sedbergh is well known for its public school founded in 1525 and it is reputed that Bonnie Prince Charlie hid in the chimney of what is now the town chemist during his retreat north in the 18th century.

There is a Wednesday market, a good range of shops and eating places and excellent walking, plus a golf course. Sedbergh is an emerging Book Town and also featured in the recent BBC2's 2005 "Twin Town" series.
