Made in the Dales - Artistic Dales

The Yorkshire Dales has proven inspirational for many talented artists, crafts people and writers as illustrated in BBC1’s Picture of Britain series. David Dimbleby’s celebration of the British landscape featured JW Turner, James Ward and Thomas Gray.

In particular, James Ward’s Gordale Scar (Malham) is perceived to be one of the greatest triumphs in British landscape art.

The magnificent Yorkshire Dales countryside is still proving inspirational today. Galleries and workshops abound in and around our market towns and villages producing a dazzling array of fine art and traditional crafts including paintings, pottery, sculptures, glass, jewellery, candles, furniture, wooden toys, handcrafted fleeces and jumpers. In particular, Farfield Mill Arts & Heritage Centre, Swaledale Woollens and The Elm Gallery are all well worth a visit.

Our local exhibitions and festivals also feature locally made arts and crafts. Sometimes you can watch the products being made or even have a go yourself! Alternatively, why not be see if you get too inspired by the Yorkshire Dales’ countryside and contact Bainside Arts for information about their courses.

You'll find internationally recognised artists in the Yorkshire Dales:

There's Mackenzie Thorpe, whose famous square sheep now grace a brand of local beer, award-winning painter and printmaker David Cook, who regularly exhibits at the Spiral Gallery in Settle and has illustrated numerous books by Bill Bryson, and Peter Hibbert whose recent commissions include Sedbergh's Millennium Standing Stone for the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

A plethora of talented arts and crafts people market their quality products under the ‘Art Connections’ and ‘Made in Yorkshire’ brands - look out for their logos at shows and workshops across the Yorkshire Dales.
