‘Reel’ & ‘Staged’ Dales

Aysgarth Falls

The beauty of the Yorkshire Dales is also internationally famed through both TV and film tourism. The scenery and the stories of James Herriot, brought to life in the popular TV series ‘All Creatures Great & Small’ have attracted visitors from far and wide.

The hit film 'Calendar Girls' is based on a true story that typifies the down-to-earth but caring and humorous character of Dales’ people. Filmed in and around the Southern Dales, the village of Knapely (alias Kettlewell) is centre stage Settle and Skipton also feature, whilst the real annual shows at Burnsall and Kilnsey provide a lively backdrop. Why not explore Calendar Girls country and our other famous film locations.

In 2005 the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales was portrayed in several popular BBC series. The market town of Sedbergh, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, was featured in BBC 2's 'Twin Towns' series.

Also in 2005, the Yorkshire Dales appeared in BBC 1’s The British Isles: A Natural History.

Why not follow Alan Titchmarsh’s footsteps and visit the spectacular Goredale Scar, Malham Cove (Malham) and Kilnsey Crag (near Kettlewell).

Alan’s journey through history also included the fascinating Stump Cross Caverns (near Pateley Bridge) and the nearby world heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens (near Ripon), the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway (Settle) and the incredible Ribblehead Viaduct (near Ingleton) and Simon’s Seat with its stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Grassington).

David Dimbleby’s Picture of Britain series also featured the Yorkshire Dales as seen through the eyes of artists, writers and composers. In particular the magnificent Gordale Scar near Malham in the Southern Dales.

While the Yorkshire Dales has welcomed many well-known TV and film celebrities during filming, (including Susanna York, Kevin Costner, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Joseph Fiennes and David Suchet), the market towns and villages also play host to a variety of local theater and musical productions throughout the year in both modern and historic theatres.
