Each year the Dales welcomes over nine million visitors, drawn to the seemingly changeless natural beauty and cultural heritage, the tranquillity and the variety of outdoor activities that the Dales has to offer. But the sheer volume of visitors does have an impact on the environment in terms of erosion and overall wear and tear.
The new right of access brings with it new responsibilities for all who visit, own or manage Britain's unique and special places. The Yorkshire Dales and Harrogate Tourism Partnership works with local businesses that rely on visitors coming to the Dales to help boost the local economy and conserve our precious natural heritage so that you will want to return time and time again!
Whether you are a new or a returning visitor, you too can help us to conserve the Dales by:
- Following the Countryside Code.
- Keeping to rights of way, especially through fields and meadows, to reduce your impact on the landscape.
- Using your car less - why not take the bus or train, or get closer to nature by walking, horse riding or cycling. For a range of helpful hints and tips on travelling in an eco-friendly manner, visit www.EcoTravelling.co.uk/home.html.
- Alternatively why not travel the Dales by train. The Wensleydale and Settle-Carlisle railways run regular services in the comfort of a modern train. However, Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway take visitors back in time to the days of steam!
- Staying overnight or shopping locally rather than bringing food with you. This helps boost the local economy, supports local enterprise, increases the number of jobs and improves the quality of life for local people.
- Making a donation to conservation projects in the Yorkshire Dales, through the Donate to the Dales scheme.
We believe that the Dales are worth conserving and hope that you will too. |
