RELATIVITY MEDIA: THE JOURNEY TO A NEW BEGINNING

Ryan Kavanaugh

Relativity Media is among the most well-known entertainment studios across the globe. It filed for bankruptcy on July 30, 2015, after lawsuits and missing loan payments. Ryan Kavanaugh, its founder, and largest shareholder strived to keep it together. The studio began selling off previously-acquired films. These include the following:

  • Before I Wake;
  • Jane Got a Gun;
  • Kidnap;
  • Shot Caller;
  • Solace;
  • Suffragette;
  • The Bronze;
  • The Secret Scripture; and
  • The Space Between Us.

Sold films

Focus Features bought Suffragette and Ryan Kavanaugh dropped out of producing the film. The studio sold Jane Got a Gun to TWC and Shot Caller to Saban Films. Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films both purchased The Bronze. STX Entertainment got The Space Between Us while Lionsgate Premiere paid for Solace. Kidnap was then sold to Aviron Pictures and Before I Wake to Netflix. Vertical Entertainment bought The Secret Scripture. In 2017, it transferred its distribution rights of EuropaCorp to STX Entertainment.

Sold assets

After emerging from bankruptcy in March 2016, it filed for another bankruptcy in May 2018. It arranged to sell all its assets. In August 2018, the US Bankruptcy Court approved the sale of Relativity Media to Ultra V Holdings.

A new beginning

Relativity Media, under new leadership, acquired US distribution rights to Come Away. It stars Angelina Jolie, David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Anna Chancellor. The schedule of release for the said film is on November 13. It will be in theatres and at home-on-demand.

Come Away

This is an imaginative origin story of two of the most beloved characters in literature. It is about Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. Three children let their imaginations run wild as they enjoy summer. Set in the English countryside, their parents encourage their imaginations. They have make-believe tea parties, sword fights, and pirate ship adventures. All these come to a halt when tragedy strikes. The middle child goes on a journey to London with the youngest. They try to sell a treasured heirloom to a sinister pawnshop owner. They are both devastated and take different approaches to cope up with the situation. Alice uses a wondrous rabbit hole for her refuge. Peter chooses to permanently escape reality. He enters a magical realm and becomes the leader of the Lost Boys.

Watch at Home

There are several films available on Relativity Media’s Watch at Home. These include Earth To Echo, Masterminds, The Best of Me, and The Disappointments Room.
